What Scout is
Microsoft Scout is an always-on personal agent that works across cloud, desktop and web — connected to Teams, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint, and to the chats, email, calendar and contacts that power a working day. Unlike Copilot, which waits for a prompt, Scout runs in the background: it can schedule meetings, generate preparation material, flag the meetings that matter, identify deliverables, block calendar time and spot risks like stalled decisions. Over time it builds context through Work IQ — learning how you work and what needs to happen next.
What 'Autopilot' means
Microsoft is positioning Autopilots as a new category above Copilots: agents that stay active without being invoked, hold their own identity, and act on a user's behalf across apps and systems. Scout is the first of the category and the centre of Microsoft's agentic strategy from Build 2026. The distinction that matters for buyers: a Copilot amplifies a person mid-task; an Autopilot is a standing digital worker whose access, actions and behaviour have to be governed like a staff member's.
The governance design
Scout operates under its own governed Entra identity — not a shared, anonymous service account — so every action is attributable to a known actor. Credentials are scoped to the task at hand and redacted from logs. Purview data protection policies are enforced on what it touches, sensitive actions require human approval, and IT admins define which actions, destinations and resources the agent can reach. This is Agent 365's model applied to a Microsoft-built agent, and it's a preview of how all agent governance in the Microsoft stack is meant to work.
Availability — read this before planning anything
Scout is an experimental release through Microsoft's Frontier program: access requires Frontier enrolment, Intune policy configuration and an opt-in attestation, and Microsoft states users need a GitHub Copilot licence to download the experience (checked August 2026). It is in private preview with a select group of customers. Microsoft has announced no general availability date and no Australian availability, so treat Scout as direction-of-travel, not as something to budget or plan deployments around. The practical preparation is upstream: fix data hygiene and agent governance now, because always-on agents inherit whatever mess they're pointed at.
