The one-line difference
GitHub Copilot writes and reviews code inside a developer's editor and GitHub; Microsoft 365 Copilot works your documents, email and meetings inside Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. Neither includes, replaces or discounts the other — a developer who needs both needs both licences. If a quote says 'Copilot' with no surname, make the vendor say which one before anyone signs.
What GitHub Copilot actually does
Code completion and next-edit suggestions in the IDE (VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains and others), a chat assistant that understands the open codebase, agent mode and a cloud coding agent that can take a task and raise a pull request, and AI code review. For Australian teams, the productivity case is strongest on completion and review — the everyday features developers touch hundreds of times a day — with the agentic features maturing quickly through 2026.
Current plans and prices
Individual (checked August 2026, USD, billed by GitHub): Free at $0 with 2,000 completions per month and limited chat; Pro at $10/month with unlimited completions plus cloud agent and code review; Pro+ at $39/month with premium model access and roughly 4x Pro's included usage; Max at $100/month for sustained high-volume agent workflows. Organisational: Business at $19 per user/month (includes 1,900 AI credits per user) and Enterprise at $39 per user/month (3,900 AI credits, requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud). On 1 June 2026 GitHub moved AI usage billing from premium request units to per-token GitHub AI Credits; seat prices were unchanged.
Buying notes for Australian organisations
GitHub bills in USD, so budget the exchange-rate exposure. Business is the default for a company — it adds licence management, policy controls and IP indemnity that individual Pro plans lack, and buying developers Pro on expenses instead of Business on contract is a governance hole, not a saving. Enterprise only makes sense if you're on GitHub Enterprise Cloud already. One forward-looking note: Microsoft's Scout preview lists a GitHub Copilot licence among its access requirements, which is the first sign of the GitHub and Microsoft 365 agent stories converging.
