What Copilot Business is
Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is the Copilot add-on priced for organisations under 300 seats. Microsoft's Australian pricing page lists it at AU$31.40 per user per month ex GST on an annual subscription, or AU$37.68 billed monthly, with a promotional price of AU$26.91 per user per month for annual purchases made between 1 July and 31 December 2026 (checked September 2026). In US dollars the same SKU lists at US$21.00, discounted to US$18.00 on the promotion. It is sold as an add-on only: Microsoft's footnote says it is 'available only to existing Microsoft 365 customers with an eligible Business plan', and the Copilot licensing guide on Microsoft Learn names four qualifying plans — Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium and Microsoft 365 Apps for business.
How it differs from the enterprise add-on
The enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on lists at AU$44.90 per user per month ex GST paid yearly, or AU$47.15 per month on an annual commitment (checked September 2026 on microsoft.com/en-au). Microsoft's licensing guide lists the Business plans as eligible bases for that add-on too, so a sub-300-seat tenant could technically buy either. The published differences are price, the 300-user ceiling and the eligible base plans — Copilot Business is AU$13.50 a month cheaper per user at list and cannot be attached to E3, E5, F-series or Office 365 enterprise plans. Frontrow's rule: if every user in the tenant sits on a Business plan, buy Copilot Business; if the tenant mixes Business and Enterprise licences, the enterprise add-on is the one that fits everyone.
The 300-seat cap in practice
The 300-user ceiling is a tenant-level limit inherited from the Business plans, and it bites in two ways. First, Copilot Business cannot be assigned beyond 300 users, so a company growing through that mark has to re-plan its whole licensing, not just its Copilot licences. Second, the cap applies to users, not to purchased seats — a 280-person business that expects to hire 30 people next year should already be talking to its CSP about the Enterprise path. Below the cap, nothing stops a partial rollout: buy 20 Copilot Business licences for the people who write, analyse and present for a living, measure use for a quarter, and only then extend. Copilot bought for the whole company and used by a fifth of it is the most common waste Frontrow finds in Australian tenants.
Reading the promotion correctly
The AU$26.91 price is a first-term discount on an annual subscription purchased between 1 July and 31 December 2026, with a seven-day cancellation window for a prorated refund (checked September 2026). It is not the renewal price. Budget the renewal at the AU$31.40 list unless your CSP confirms something better in writing, and remember that annual commitments under Microsoft's commerce rules cannot be reduced mid-term — you can add seats, not remove them. Two other things change the maths: the Business Standard and Business Premium 'with Copilot' bundles price Copilot far lower than the add-on for users who need both, and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is already free on every Business plan for web-grounded prompts. Check both before paying add-on prices.
