Managed IT for Cooktown.
Built for the town at the end of the sealed road.

Frontrow runs managed IT, Microsoft 365 and cyber security for Cooktown and Cook Shire — the accommodation, tour and charter operators behind the Cape's visitor traffic, the pastoral and remote-area operations across the largest shire in Queensland, and the organisations working alongside council, the school, the airport and the port. Supported from Frontrow's Townsville office, with continuity designed for a coast that has met a category 4 landfall before.

Why local knowledge matters

The difference regional understanding makes.

Cooktown runs on a dry season every operator plans around, one sealed highway to Cairns, a daily flight, and a wet season that can cut the Cape off from the coast. The provider that designs for those realities answers a different way to the one selling a capital-city template.

A city MSP emails you a plan that assumes the power stays on, the link stays up and a technician is an hour away.

Frontrow runs IT for Cook Shire businesses with senior engineers, continuity designed for distance and a documented cyclone history, and on-site work backed from a real Townsville office.

A provider that understands a remote Cape York town and plans for it, not one surprised by it.

Honest about the address

No Cooktown shopfront. Senior delivery either way.

Frontrow's offices are in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Adelaide — not Cooktown. Rather than pretend otherwise, Frontrow supports Cooktown and Cook Shire from its Townsville office at Level 2, 280 Flinders Street, with senior architects pulled in from Brisbane when scope needs them, and schedules on-site visits when a job genuinely needs hands on the ground.

Frontrow has been a Microsoft Partner since 2018, with Modern Work and AI specialisation and a 5× Microsoft MVP on the team. For monitoring, Microsoft 365, Essential Eight and Copilot work, that depth reaches a Cooktown business the same way it reaches a Brisbane one — the senior architect on the call, wherever the desk happens to be.

  • Tourism at the top of the sealed road

Cooktown sits at the mouth of the Endeavour River, where James Cook beached the Endeavour for repairs in 1770, and it has become a popular destination since the Mulligan Highway was sealed in 2006 — all-weather road access for the first time, and Cairns to Cooktown in about three and a half hours instead of six. The Port of Cooktown, run by Ports North, mostly serves cruise ships and tourist vessels. ABS counted about 410 businesses across Cook Shire at June 2025. Frontrow supports the accommodation, hospitality, tour and charter operators whose bookings and payments have to work every morning of the dry season.

  • Pastoral and remote-area operations

The bridge over the Endeavour River, completed in 1881, opened the pastoral lands of the Endeavour and McIvor River valleys, and Cook Shire — the largest local government area in Queensland at 105,719 km² — is still mostly country where the nearest town is hours away. Frontrow designs identity, devices and continuity for stations, contractors and operators whose crews can't just walk down the hall to a help desk.

  • Government and community services for the Cape

Cooktown is the seat of Cook Shire and the service centre for the district, including the Aboriginal communities of Hope Vale, 47 km to the north-west, and Wujal Wujal, 72 km to the south. Council owns and operates Cooktown Airport, Cooktown State School runs from Prep to Year 12, and the Port of Cooktown handles the visiting vessels. The contractors, training providers and community organisations working alongside those services carry government-grade security expectations. Frontrow aligns controls to the Essential Eight and reports posture in terms a procurement team will accept.

  • Trades, transport and local services

A remote town runs on the builders, trades, mechanics, freight operators and allied health providers that keep it supplied — businesses whose job scheduling, invoicing, records and email are the operation. Frontrow keeps that plumbing working, secured and backed up, and designs it so a slow or interrupted link to the coast doesn't stop the day.

Designed for Cape York

Built for the gateway to the Cape.

A national MSP can sell a generic plan and a local one can sell a local address. Frontrow brings senior Microsoft and cyber depth to a town founded in 1873 as the supply port for the Palmer River goldfields, that now sits at the top of the sealed Mulligan Highway, serves the largest shire in Queensland, and plans every year around a wet season that has put a category 4 cyclone across its coast within living memory. Frontrow services the wider far north the same way — including Cairns, 326 km south, and Mareeba, where the Mulligan Highway begins.

  • Truly remote-site IT

Frontrow has no Cooktown office. Day-to-day support, monitoring and the Microsoft depth run remotely from the Townsville office at Level 2, 280 Flinders Street, with on-site visits scheduled when hands-on work genuinely needs them. Out here that is the right model by design — monitoring, patching, identity and most issue resolution happen without anyone on site.

  • Connectivity at the end of the highway

Cooktown is 326 km north of Cairns by road and the only daily link beyond that is Hinterland Aviation's flights to Cairns. A premises on Charlotte Street, a lodge at Rossville and a station office up the Peninsula Developmental Road don't get the same link. Frontrow scopes connectivity from what each address can actually get, and designs mobile-broadband or satellite failover where a single fixed line would otherwise be the whole plan.

  • Cyclone and wet-season continuity

Cyclone Ita crossed the coast at Cape Flattery, about 40 km north of Cooktown, on 11 April 2014 as a category 4 after peaking at category 5 offshore, and evacuation centres opened in Cooktown again ahead of Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. Frontrow designs cloud-first, so a business keeps working from wherever staff are when the office, the power or the road is out.

  • Continuity over distance

When you're this far out, a failure can't wait on a part or a person arriving from the coast. Frontrow builds backup and restore regimes and documented recovery so systems come back without a truck roll, and staff know the plan before anything goes wrong.

Business continuity

Ita came ashore at Cape Flattery. Design for the next one.

Cyclone Ita reached category 5 off the coast before weakening and making landfall at Cape Flattery, about 40 km north of Cooktown, late on 11 April 2014 as a category 4. The silica mine at the cape was severely damaged. Nine years later, in December 2023, Cooktown opened evacuation centres again ahead of Cyclone Jasper, which crossed the coast near Wujal Wujal and went on to become the wettest tropical cyclone in Australian history.

For a remote town, the exposure isn't only the wind — it's what days without power, connectivity or road access do to bookings, payroll and a season that doesn't pause, when the nearest spare part is 326 km away. Continuity should be designed before November, not after the warning. Start with Frontrow's free cyclone season IT continuity check and the cyclone-season IT continuity checklist for Queensland.

  • Cloud-first, site-optional

If the office is unreachable, work shouldn't stop with it. Frontrow puts identity, files and phones in Microsoft 365 — not on a server under a tin roof — so staff keep working from wherever they've ridden the weather out.

  • Backups outside the cyclone's path

Off-site, geographically separate backups with tested restores and documented RTO/RPO. A backup drive in the same building as the server is not a continuity plan on a coast a category 4 has crossed.

  • Power & connectivity failover

UPS on the comms rack, 4G/5G or satellite failover on the router, and a written plan for who calls whom and what comes back first — designed so a lodge, a station office or a clinic rides out an outage instead of going dark with it.

Plan it with real numbers

Free tools before you talk to anyone.

Frontrow publishes the tools it uses in scoping conversations, free and without a sign-up wall — so a Cooktown business can put numbers around cost, security posture and wet-season readiness before the first call.

  • Connectivity scoped honestly

Frontrow quotes from what each address can actually get — fixed-line where it exists, business-grade wireless, 4G/5G or satellite where it doesn't — and builds offline tolerance in from the start rather than promising fibre the street can't order.

  • Built for split sites

An office on Charlotte Street, a lodge at Rossville, a station up the Peninsula Developmental Road and an accountant in Cairns — they don't all get the same link. Frontrow designs SharePoint, Teams and Intune for offline-then-sync usage and mixed connectivity, so the slowest site in the fleet isn't the one that breaks the model.

Co-managed option

Got an internal IT lead? Frontrow slots in around them.

Some Cook Shire operations already have someone who keeps the lights on. Frontrow co-manages — taking the out-of-hours, the Microsoft depth, the security and the specialist project work — and hands back the day-to-day that team wants to keep. Fully managed if there's no internal IT at all.

  • Predictable monthly cost

Fixed scope, fixed price, fixed SLA. Project work is scoped separately, never slipped in through support.

  • Board-grade reporting

Monthly reports an executive team can read — Essential Eight posture, ticket trends, risk — not a ticket dump.

FAQ — Cooktown & Cook Shire

What Cape York businesses ask Frontrow.

Do you have an office in Cooktown?
No — Frontrow's offices are in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Adelaide. Frontrow services Cooktown and Cook Shire remotely from the Townsville office at Level 2, 280 Flinders Street, with the same senior, certified people who run IT for clients across QLD, NSW and SA, and schedules on-site visits when work genuinely needs hands on the ground. The honest version: most managed IT is delivered remotely regardless of address, and Frontrow won't claim a local shopfront it doesn't have.
Can you really support a site this remote?
Yes — remote and over-distance support is exactly the model Frontrow builds for. Monitoring, patching, identity and most issue resolution happen without anyone on site. Continuity and backups are designed so a failure doesn't wait on a part or a person arriving from Cairns, and on-site work is arranged from the Townsville office when it's genuinely needed.
What kind of Cooktown businesses do you run IT for?
Accommodation, hospitality, tour and charter operators behind the Cape's visitor traffic, pastoral and remote-area operations across Cook Shire, contractors and organisations working alongside Cook Shire Council, the school, the airport and the port, and the trades, transport and allied-health businesses that keep a remote town running. Anywhere senior, security-led managed IT matters more than a local address.
Do you cover the rest of Cook Shire — Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Lakeland, Laura, Coen?
Yes. Because delivery is remote-first, a site in Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Lakeland, Laura or Coen gets the same monitoring, Microsoft 365 operations and security baseline as one in Cooktown itself. On-site visits are scheduled by need, not by postcode, and Frontrow designs for mixed connectivity so the farthest site in the fleet isn't the one that breaks the model.
How do you plan around cyclones and the wet season?
As a documented local reality, not a hypothetical. Cyclone Ita made landfall at Cape Flattery, about 40 km north of Cooktown, on 11 April 2014 as a category 4 after reaching category 5 offshore, and Cooktown opened evacuation centres again ahead of Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. Frontrow designs cloud-first — identity, files and phones in Microsoft 365 rather than a server under a tin roof — with off-site backups, tested restores and a continuity plan written before the season, not during it.
Can you support a seasonal business that scales up and down?
Yes — that's the shape of a dry-season visitor economy. Licensing, identity and devices are managed so the fleet grows for the season and shrinks after it without paying year-round for peak headcount, and offboarding is enforced so seasonal staff don't retain access after they've moved on.
Some of our machines are still on Windows 10 — is that a problem?
It's a countdown. Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, and Extended Security Updates only buy time — at a rising price. Frontrow's free Microsoft end-of-support exposure check shows which devices and servers in a fleet are running out of road, and managed clients get a planned, budgeted upgrade path instead of a surprise.
Is this fully managed, or can you co-manage with our internal IT person?
Either. Frontrow runs IT fully managed for businesses without an internal team, and co-manages for those with an IT lead — taking the out-of-hours, the Microsoft depth and the specialist work, and handing back the day-to-day they want to keep.
