Microsoft Entra Verified ID — Decentralised Identity for Australian Organisations

Microsoft Entra Verified ID provides a way to issue and verify digital credentials, enabling secure and privacy-respecting identity solutions based on decentralised identifiers and verifiable credentials.

What Entra Verified ID does

Entra Verified ID facilitates the issuance and verification of digital credentials, aligning with the principles of decentralised identity. It operates on an issuer, holder, and verifier model. The issuer creates and signs verifiable credentials. The holder securely stores these credentials, often within the Microsoft Entra Verified ID mobile app. The verifier then requests and validates the credentials, confirming the holder’s attributes without needing to access the underlying data from the issuer. This approach enhances privacy and reduces reliance on centralised identity providers.

Entra Verified ID in Australian tenants today

Adoption of Entra Verified ID within the AU mid-market is currently in an early stage. The Australian Government’s Trusted Digital Identity Framework is shaping the future of digital identity in Australia, and Entra Verified ID can be a component of solutions that seek to meet the requirements of that framework. The licensing model requires an existing Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2 licence per user issuing or verifying credentials, which impacts cost considerations for AU organisations. Early use cases are emerging in areas such as employment verification and professional credential management.
