For a regional or rural business, the honest question is not whether attendance is offered but whether it has ever actually been tested against your real location, and whether travel is a known, documented cost rather than a surprise.

Often, yes — and in many cases it genuinely outperforms waiting for a technician to drive out. Good remote monitoring can catch and resolve problems before anyone on site notices them, without a multi-hour drive in between. The distinction that matters is not remote versus on-site, it is whether the arrangement is honest about which one you are actually getting, and whether there is a real, tested plan for the times hands are genuinely needed on the ground.

How do we check whether on-site attendance is actually included in our agreement?

Read the agreement itself rather than relying on what was said in the sales conversation. Look for a specific, written attendance commitment for your site, not general language like 'reasonable efforts' or 'as required'. If attendance has never actually been called on, treat it as untested rather than assumed to work. A short, deliberate test — a scheduled non-urgent visit — is a reasonable way to confirm it before an outage forces the question.

What should we expect for replacement hardware lead times to a regional address?

Freight to a regional or rural address is genuinely slower and less predictable than to a capital-city site, and any provider that has not acknowledged this is not planning around your reality. The useful question is not a fixed number of days, it is whether critical spares are held somewhere closer than the provider's home office, whether a loaner arrangement exists, and whether there is a documented plan for what your business does while a part is in transit.

Do we need a provider with a local office in our town to be properly supported?

Not necessarily. A local shopfront in every regional town is not realistic for most providers, and a business that claims one everywhere should be treated with some scepticism. What matters more is whether the provider is upfront about which sites they support remotely versus attend in person, and whether the remote arrangement has actually been tested against your connectivity and your critical systems, rather than assumed to be equivalent.

What happens if the technician who usually looks after our site is unavailable?

If support genuinely depends on one person's memory of your network, your line-of-business systems and your site quirks, that is a single point of failure regardless of how good that person is. Ask to see the documentation your provider actually holds on your site and consider whether an unfamiliar technician could pick it up from it alone.

Should our support arrangement change during wet season, harvest or shutdown periods?

If those periods change how your business operates, they should change how it is supported. A property working around harvest, a mine site on shutdown, or a business affected by wet-season access all have periods where downtime costs more and access can be harder. A documented seasonal plan — even a simple one — is a reasonable thing to ask for, rather than relying on the provider to remember or improvise each year.

Who should own the relationship with our telco and line-of-business vendors?

In a genuinely regional-ready arrangement, your IT provider does — or at minimum, has a clear, agreed role in escalating faults on your behalf. If a connectivity fault or a line-of-business application issue always ends up back on your desk to chase directly, the support arrangement has a gap at exactly the point where a regional business needs the most help, because those vendors are often harder to reach from a remote site as well.
