Managed IT for Launceston.
Built for an island that can be cut off.

Frontrow runs managed IT services, IT support, Microsoft 365 and cyber security for Launceston and northern Tasmania — the health precinct around the LGH, the university quarter at Inveresk, the Bell Bay industrial supply chain and the professional firms in between. Serviced remotely by senior, certified people, and architected on an assumption mainland providers rarely make: Tasmania's connection to the rest of the internet can fail.

The island problem

Three cables carry Tasmania's internet. Two have already failed on the same day.

Tasmania reaches the mainland internet through just three undersea cables across Bass Strait. On 28 February 2022, two of them were knocked out by separate digging and roadworks incidents — a statewide internet and mobile outage of around six hours, with connectivity running at roughly 30 per cent of normal while everything queued through the one surviving link.

The electricity story is longer. When the Basslink interconnector faulted in December 2015, the repair took six months — supply wasn't restored until June 2016. Undersea infrastructure fails rarely, but when it fails, it can fail for a long time.

Frontrow's position: cloud architecture for a Tasmanian business must assume the island can be cut off. That is a design input, not a footnote — and it changes how Microsoft 365, identity, backups and communications get set up from day one.

  • 28 February 2022

Two of Tasmania's three internet cables cut in separate incidents on one day. Roughly six hours of statewide disruption, connectivity at about 30 per cent of normal.

  • December 2015 – June 2016

The Basslink electricity cable fault took six months to repair. Long-duration failure of Bass Strait infrastructure is a documented scenario, not a hypothetical.

  • What Frontrow designs for

Offline-then-sync SharePoint and Teams, cached sign-in, local copies of the data that keeps you trading, tested restores, and a communications plan that doesn't depend on the link that just failed.

Why the design matters

The difference a Tasmania-aware provider makes.

An island changes the support model. The provider that plans for Bass Strait failing answers a different way to the one that assumes the cloud is always reachable.

A mainland MSP quotes cloud-first and never asks what happens when the island's three cables are down.

Frontrow designs Microsoft 365, identity and continuity for Tasmanian conditions — remote-first delivery from Adelaide, architecture that assumes the Bass Strait links can fail.

A Launceston business that keeps trading through an outage the mainland never notices.

Honest about the address

No Launceston shopfront. Senior delivery either way.

Frontrow's offices are in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Adelaide — not Launceston. Rather than pretend otherwise, Frontrow services Launceston and northern Tasmania remotely from the Adelaide team, and schedules on-site visits when a job genuinely needs hands on the ground.

Frontrow has been a Microsoft Partner since 2018, with Modern Work and AI specialisation and a 5× Microsoft MVP on the team. For monitoring, Microsoft 365, Essential Eight and Copilot work, that depth reaches a Launceston business the same way it reaches an Adelaide one — the senior architect on the call, wherever the desk happens to be.

  • Health & the LGH precinct

Launceston General Hospital anchors health care for northern Tasmania. Its revised precinct masterplan went out for public consultation in September 2025 — a masterplan, not yet funded construction — and tenders opened in March 2026 for a $90m Mental Health Precinct. Frontrow runs Microsoft 365, backups and Essential Eight aligned controls for the clinics, allied-health providers and specialists that grow around a precinct like that, so they can prove security posture and keep patient-facing systems available.

  • The university quarter at Inveresk

The University of Tasmania completed its move to the city-centre Inveresk campus in October 2024, capped by the $97m health-and-sciences building delivered under the Launceston City Deal. Frontrow supports the education-adjacent businesses, training providers and student-facing services a city-centre campus pulls in — including the identity and device management that high-churn, semester-driven workforces need.

  • Bell Bay heavy industry

Rio Tinto's Bell Bay Aluminium — the Southern Hemisphere's first aluminium smelter — reported 552 full-time-equivalent employees and $261.52m of local spend in its 2025 company data. Frontrow runs IT for the engineering, maintenance, transport and services firms in that supply chain, where industrial customers increasingly push Essential Eight-grade security expectations down to their suppliers.

  • Energy & major projects

Marinus Link — the $5b, 255km undersea interconnector between Tasmania and Victoria — reached final investment decision in August 2025, with construction mobilising through 2026 and completion expected by 2030. Frontrow builds IT for the contractors and services firms positioning for project work: project-based contracts, site offices, and the security posture major-project procurement now demands.

Designed for Launceston

Built for northern Tasmania's conditions.

A national MSP can sell a generic plan and a local one can sell a local address. Frontrow brings senior Microsoft and cyber depth to a city whose health precinct, university quarter and industrial supply chain all depend on systems holding up on an island with three cables to the rest of the world.

  • Senior people, serviced remotely

Frontrow has no Launceston office. Day-to-day support, monitoring and the Microsoft depth run remotely from the Adelaide team, with on-site visits scheduled when hands-on work genuinely needs them. The engagement model is the senior architect on the call — not a junior at a local desk.

  • Architecture that assumes severance

Three cables carry Tasmania's internet, and in February 2022 two failed on the same day. Frontrow designs SharePoint, Teams, Intune and identity so a Launceston business keeps working offline-then-sync when the island's connectivity degrades — with local copies of whatever it needs to keep trading.

  • Business Fibre Zone connectivity

Launceston is a listed nbn Business Fibre Zone, and nearby George Town and Bell Bay sit in a separately listed zone of their own. Frontrow scopes connectivity as part of managed IT, handles the carrier, and designs the failover for the days the problem is bigger than your street.

  • Continuity with flood memory

The June 2016 floods came close to inundating Invermay — the city's levees were credited with saving it, and levee upgrades ran from January 2024. Continuity planning here covers premises and power as well as cyber: tested restores, documented RTO/RPO, and a plan that still works when the office itself is the problem.

Co-managed option

Got an internal IT lead? Frontrow slots in around them.

Plenty of Launceston operations already have someone who keeps the lights on. Frontrow co-manages — taking the out-of-hours, the Microsoft depth, the security and the specialist project work — and hands back the day-to-day that team wants to keep. Fully managed if there's no internal IT at all.

  • Predictable monthly cost

Fixed scope, fixed price, fixed SLA. Project work is scoped separately, never slipped in through support.

  • Board-grade reporting

Monthly reports an executive team can read — Essential Eight posture, ticket trends, risk — not a ticket dump.

FAQ — Launceston & northern Tasmania

What Launceston businesses ask Frontrow.

Do you have an office in Launceston?
No — Frontrow's offices are in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville and Adelaide. Frontrow services Launceston and northern Tasmania remotely from the Adelaide team, with the same senior, certified people who run IT for clients across the mainland, and schedules on-site visits when work genuinely needs hands on the ground. The honest version: most managed IT is delivered remotely regardless of address, and Frontrow won't claim a local shopfront it doesn't have.
If you're not local, why use Frontrow over a Launceston MSP?
Depth. Frontrow has been a Microsoft Partner since 2018 with Modern Work and AI specialisation and a 5× Microsoft MVP on the team — senior capability a single-office regional provider often can't keep on staff. For monitoring, Microsoft 365, Essential Eight and Copilot work, the senior person is on the call no matter where the desk is.
What happens to our systems when Tasmania's internet goes down?
Tasmania connects to the mainland internet through three undersea cables. On 28 February 2022 two of them were knocked out on the same day by separate digging and roadworks incidents, and the state ran at roughly 30 per cent of normal connectivity for about six hours. Frontrow designs for exactly that: offline-capable SharePoint and Teams usage, cached sign-in, local copies of business-critical data, and a communications plan that doesn't depend on the link that just failed. The goal is a business that keeps trading through the outage, not one that discovers its dependencies during it.
Is Launceston in an nbn Business Fibre Zone?
Yes — Launceston is a listed nbn Business Fibre Zone, which puts business-grade fibre on the table for premises in the zone. George Town and Bell Bay sit in a separately listed zone of their own. Frontrow scopes connectivity as part of managed IT and deals with the carrier, including the failover design for the days the problem sits beyond the island's shoreline.
What kinds of Launceston businesses does Frontrow run IT for?
Health and allied-health providers around the Launceston General Hospital precinct, education-linked businesses around the University of Tasmania's Inveresk campus, the engineering and services supply chain into Bell Bay, contractors positioning for Marinus Link work, and the professional firms in between. Anywhere senior, security-led managed IT matters more than a local address.
Is this fully managed, or can you co-manage with our internal IT person?
Either. Frontrow runs IT fully managed for businesses without an internal team, and co-manages for those with an IT lead — taking the out-of-hours, the Microsoft depth and the specialist work, and handing back the day-to-day they want to keep.
We still run Windows 10 — is that a problem?
Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Business devices on paid Extended Security Updates reach the next decision point on 13 October 2026, when ESU Year 2 costs US$122 per device — the free consumer program that runs to 12 October 2027 doesn't cover business use. Frontrow audits the fleet, prices the ESU-versus-Windows 11 decision and manages the migration. The free end-of-support exposure checker linked on this page returns a dated timeline in a few minutes.
