Severe Tropical Cyclone Larry crossed the coast near Innisfail around daybreak on 20 March 2006 at category 4 intensity, a day after peaking at category 5. The Bureau of Meteorology records 10,000 homes damaged, prolonged power outages and 80–90% of Australia's banana crop destroyed. Five years later, Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi came ashore near Mission Beach in the first hour of 3 February 2011 as a marginal category 5, with a barograph at the Tully sugar mill recording 929 hPa as the eye passed. Between the storms, the rivers rise: the Bureau's Johnstone River flood brochure lists significant floods in 1967, 1999, 2009, 2018 and December 2023, and notes that severe flooding of the Johnstone is often associated with tropical cyclones.
